EVENTS & HOTELS NEAR THE RIVER THAMES

Thames

The River Thames is the longest river entirely in England, boasting 45 locks, 25 species of fish and the status as the only river in Europe to have a national trail follow its entire length.

With evidence of human life along the river since Neolithic times, the River Thames is, to quote John Burns, “liquid history”. It’s played many roles, acting as an economic resource, a maritime route, a boundary, a water and food source and a leisure facility, amongst many other things.

The University Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge is held along the river every year as well as the Henley Royal Regatta. The river has also inspired many cultural icons over the years, from Claude Monet, Canaletto and Turner in the art world, to Kenneth Grahame, Joseph Conrad and Henry James in the literature world.
