Cumberland in top hotel honour

02 March 2007

The Cumberland Hotel in London has been awarded Hotel of the Year at Thistle Hotels and Guoman Hotels' recent Employee of The Year Awards.

The annual awards recognise the crème de la crème within the company. The Cumberland was closely contested for the award by Thistle Liverpool and Dyce Skean Dhu.

Sanjay Nijhawan, Area General Manager responsible for The Cumberland, said: "The Cumberland has worked extremely hard to gain a reputation for being a world-class hotel, and we are thrilled to be acknowledged by our own company for this."

Other honours at the glittering ceremony included the F&B Kitchen Employee of the Year Award to Bert Weithers, kitchen porter at Thistle Marble Arch who was recognised for his 47 years commitment to the company and never having a day off sick. He received a special tribute from Gary Rhodes in recognition of his outstanding achievement. Awards were also given to staff from the group's hotels across the UK including Thistle Poole, Thistle Aberdeen Altens and The Royal Horseguards.

Rachelle Prior, Director of Human Resources said, "These awards are more hotly contested than the Oscars and to win one is a great achievement. Our employees work extremely hard and it's important that we recognise and reward this."

All winners received a cheque for £1000 and a trophy at a special ceremony held at The Tower Hotel, in London.
